**SPOILERS** from all three Wolverine trilogy films, especially LOGAN. You've been warned, BUB!
X-men Origins: Wolverine
Forgettable in many, many ways. Let's talk about what it did RIGHT! Up until this film, we did not get a healthy dose of more comic real action in the X-men series. Remember Wolverine using his claws to quickly 180 a motorcycle. Awesome! Sabretooth and Wolverine fight it out in all their animalistic rage. Remember the first Sabretooth, basically a stiff moving wrestler. The ensemble of mercs Stryker puts together. Wade Wilson was awesome and paved the way for the Deadpool we now love. Gambit had some great moments. The Blob was hilarious and pretty cool. Some of it went way too far, but it laid the groundwork for other more successful films. It was a good story with some heart. Jackman was awesome as the Wolverine. The film showcased his relationship with Sabretooth which was a bit of a retcon, but entertaining nevertheless.
The first successful Wolverine film was our first look at how visually beautiful of a film you could build around the animal Wolverine. Set in Japan and based loosely on the Chris Claremont Wolverine comic run, we see the animal come out of the wilderness and back into civilized society. The backdrop of Japanese society was beautifully portrayed. The action sequences were some of the best. The scene on top of the speeding shinkansen bullet train, the fight with Shingen Yashida, and the Wolverine versus the Black Ninja Clan are EPIC and stand up against any action in the genre! The story was compelling and steady making The Wolverine one of the best X-men films to date.
By now, you know this film. It is as powerful a story as we've seen in the comic book movie genre. It is as beautiful of a film as you were promised. The end of the line for Wolverine and Hugh Jackman's time in the role was as sweet as it was sad. You can read more of our thoughts on the incredible film in our 3v3: LOGAN. Yet, was it the best in the trilogy? The villain was about as weak as you can get. The movie was more about Logan than the Wolverine, if you know what I mean. The timeline is still a complete mess for X-men, and it shows in spots in the film. The action was good in places but doesn't compare to The Wolverine. It's bloody, brutal, and powerful. But, is that enough to be the best film in the trilogy?
